In 1901 Goncharova began her own studies at the Moscow Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture as a sculptor, under Pavel Trubetskoi, who was associated with the World of Art movement. By 1903, she began exhibiting in major Russian salons. She was awarded a silver medal for sculpture in 1903-04.

Natalie Goncharova painted Pierrot and Colombina in 1906 and is perhaps a self-portrait of the artist in harlequin dress. With her retrospective at Tate Modern running through 8 September 2019, Natalia Goncharova in all her different facets is being honoured as the exceptional artist that she was. Perhaps Goncharova would actually have fit better in the 21 st century art world, where the schizophrenic fragmented condition of our contemporary world has created a breeding ground of artists working between countless different styles and disciplines.
